Summer Reading Program 2010: Make a Splash, Read!

Whenever You Want: Pick up a reading log from the library. Read ANYTHING YOU WANT! Keep track of how much TIME you spend reading over the summer. Join a reading team and see which team reads the most this summer. Celebrate your reading success with fun and prizes at the picnic on July 30 at 5:30 p.m. Visit the library to play games and make crafts all summer long at the "A Splash of Fun" table.

Special Events: Wednesday, July 14: History Theater Troupe visits! Friday, July 30 5:30 p.m.: Puppet Show and Picnic!

Fantastic Fridays: 2 - 3 p.m. June 18 & 25, July 2, 9, 16 and 23. Run and shout until we wear you out! Then snack and listen to a story.

Theater Camp: August 2nd - August 27th, MWF 2-4 p.m. Learn how to put on a play, from learning lines and performing to making sets and costumes. Perform the play for the public on August 28!

Day Care Providers: The librarians are happy to visit daycares to tell stories and reading logs. Just call the library to schedule some visits!

Shadow Puppetry Workshop and Performance at Gilbert Library

Artists and performers, here’s something just for you. Professional puppeteer Jim Ouray will teach a shadow puppetry workshop at the Gilbert Library on Saturday, March 27th from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Participants of all ages are invited to learn the ancient art of creating puppets. You will also perform your own shadow puppet program for the public at 7:30 p.m. The workshop is limited to ten (10) people. To sign up, please call the Gilbert Library at 748-2230.

Free Wii Tournament for Teens in Gilbert

On Saturday, March 13th at 2:00 p.m. the Gilbert Library will turn into Wii Headquarters. We’ll set up the Wii and play Winter Olympics and Sports (boxing, golf, bowling and baseball) tournament style. Prizes will be awarded, and pizza will be served. For more information, call 748-2230.

Spring 2010 Readdog Dates

The Gilbert Library is gearing up for the Spring 2010 session of Reading toJordy. Jordy, a Certified Therapy dog, is the Library's Readdog. "Jordyand I both have so much fun doing this," says Barb Buresh, Jordy'sMom/Owner. Children learning to read also have fun reading out loud asJordy quietly listens. Reading skills and social skills both improve as achild participates in a Readdog program. The Spring 2010 session will run for eight weeks: March 11 to April 29th. Participants come once a week,every Thursday evening. Four slots are available: 5:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m.,6:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. It's first come, first served, so the first tosign up will get the Spring 2010 slots. Movie Night is March 6th

Gilbert Library will show the 2009 children's movie "Where the Wild Things Are" on Saturday, March 6th at 7:00 p.m. This movie is based on thefamous children's book by Maurice Sendak, and is rated PG. Free Tickets to local Museums and Events

Want to go to an upcoming concert or play but just didn't think you could afford it? Need to get the kids out of the house to something fun and free? Visit the Eveleth and Gilbert libraries and check out a FREE Museum Pass to get free tickets to a variety of local events and attractions. Yes, you check them out just like you check out books! You can have as many tickets as you want, but first come first served. Free tickets to the following events are currently available at the libraries:

Friday February 19 7:00 p.m. The children's play "Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing" at the Reif Center in Grand Rapids.

Sunday, March 7 the Duluth Symphany's "Lollipop Concert" at the DECC. Catch the FREE bus at the Eveleth Library @ 12:30 p.m., catch the bus at the Gilbert library @ 12:50 p.m. The Concert starts at 3:00 p.m. Return home to Gilbert on the bus by 6:45 p.m. and to Eveleth by 7:00 p.m. If you don't want to take the bus and want to drive down yourselves you can get tickets for the 3:00 concert only.

Friday March 12 7:30 p.m. The concert "Chatterton Duo" at the Virginia High School Auditorium.

Free tickets are also available to visit the following attractions any time you want: The Carlton County Historical Society, the Cook County Historical Society, the Duluth Depot, the Ely-Winton Historical Society, the Great Lakes Aquarium, the Judy Garland and Children's Museum, the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum, Palkie Grist Mill in Esko, and Split Rock Lighthouse.

Take advantage of this great deal when you visit your hometown Eveleth or Gilbert libraries.

This project was funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 which dedicated funding to proserve Minnota's arts and cultural heritage.

Pajama Story & Game Night @ the Gilbert Library Feb 20th

Want to get the kids out of the house on a Saturday night for someexercise, fun and food? Bring them to the Gilbert Library on SaturdayFebruary 20th @ 7:00 p.m. for some loud rowdy running games and quietsleepytime stories. Jordy the Readdog will be there, and refreshmentswill be served. Gilbert Public Library has gone Wireless

Visitors to the Gilbert Public Library will find something new in 2010. The Library now has wireless internet available! Anyone can now bring in their own laptop computer and access the internet through the Library's wireless internet network. This will be especially useful during those busy after-school hours and in the summers when tourists from around the world pass through Gilbert. Access Broadband is providing the wireless service at no cost to the Library.

Closure January 6th

Hot Reads for Cold Nights

Hot Reads for Cold Nights is a reading program for Adults which will be held from January through March, 2010 at the Gilbert Public Library. Sign up at the Library to be eligible for weekly drawings! Any fiction or non-fiction library book read during the course of the program is eligible for submission in a weekly prize drawing. Digital Camera Basics

Got a new camera for the holidays? Have one you don't know how to use? The Gilbert Public Library will be offering a workshop for those interested in learning about their camera on Saturday, January 16th @ 2:00 p.m. We'll show you the basics: how to take pictures, load them into your computer, and print them. All of your other questions will be answered, too. Bring your camera, fresh or fully charged batteries, memory card or computer cable, and the owner's manual.
