2008 Gilbert Public Library Director’s essay contest:“What will Minnesota be like in 150 years?”

The 2008 Gilbert Public Library Director’s essay contest:“What will Minnesota be like in 150 years?”(in 51 words or less)

“Boy, it was so hard to pick an essay winner this year!” said Amy Hay,Gilbert Library Director. “We had lots of interesting essays in thecontest. There were some common themes, such as flying cars and robots. Iwonder if those writers were influenced by images from the movies? Someessays were a little sad, with not much hope for the future. Others werevery optimistic, with an environmental theme. The best essays were wellwritten with a unique point of view. All of the staff of the GilbertLibrary read all of the essays, and because the authors’ names were writtenon the backs of the entries we had no idea who wrote which essay until thefinal decision was made. Ultimately, we picked Robin Kutsi’s essay becauseit was very realistic and different from any of the others.”

The Winner:

I think in 2158 Minnesota will have a larger population. There will be lessfarms with more homes being built in their place. There will be energyproduction made from reusable sources like plants. I also think LakeSuperior will be smaller with the water level dropping yearly. ~Robin Kutsi

Robin is in Mrs. Oates 5th grade class at Nelle Shean Elementary. She isthe daughter of Rob and Sheila Kutsi.

Award Winning Author Visit and Beer Tasting @ the Gilbert Library

History buffs and beer lovers alike will enjoy Minnesota Book Award winning author Doug Hoverson's talk and beer tasting event at the Gilbert Public Library (17 N. Broadway) on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at 7:00 pm.

Hoverson, author of Land of Amber Waters, will offer a presentation on the brewing history of Minnesota, with an emphasis on breweries of northern Minnesota and some of their Wisconsin rivals. Because event participants will taste beers from various breweries as a part of this presentation, this event is for adults over 21 only.

Dedicated home brewers and casual pub crawlers alike will be amazed by the stories of Minnesota beers and breweries. From the first illegal brewer at Fort Snelling to the craft brewers and major companies of today, nearly 300 breweries have opened and operated at one time or another in 125 cities and towns around the state.

Program participants who take part in the beer tasting are asked to make a $7 donation to cover costs of the beers.

This program is supported by the Minnesota Book Awards through grants from the Minnesota Department of Education – State Library Services and the Minnesota Library Association Foundation.

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza." —Dave Barry

Haiku Wednesday

I'll try and post a new haiku every Wednesday. For those of you who don't know, a haiku is a Japanese type of poetry. It is broken up into three lines, the first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables. Here is this weeks example:

Cold
Cars that will not start
It even hurts to breath in
How long until spring
